Sculpture by the Sea | Cottesloe
For those who enjoy art and the outdoors, Sculpture by the Sea at Cottesloe beach should well be on your to do list. Inviting you to wander along the coastline, encountering a myriad of contemporary sculptures in the fresh salty air, there really is no better way to experience art.
Perth’s largest free to the public outdoor art exhibition, Sculpture by the Sea annually organises a diverse range of sculptures from local, national and international artists. Selecting both emerging and established artists, the festival is a solid platform for new artists to break through and be seen in an event that has a reputation for its high calibre of works.
With 69 sculptures on display, each year is strikingly diverse, aiming to be an innovative showcase of the latest in contemporary sculpture.
In its anniversary year, 31 Western Australian artists will exhibit their works, as well as a strong range of Australian artists from across New South Wales, Victoria, ACT and Tasmania. This year the Decade Club welcomed Tim Macfarlane Reid, and leading international sculptors Guan Wei, David Černý, Chen Wenling, Peter Lundberg and Wen-di Zhang have joined the event.
Always a highlight at the event, Sculpture Inside invites the audience to view small sculpture works by all the artists. Located within the Cottelsoe Surf Life Saving Club, the gallery space hosts over 150 small works, enabling artists to show a broader range of their practice.
Focussing on supporting the development of artists, the Western Australian Sculptor Scholarship has accompanied the event since 2005. For the second year, judges have awarded two artists the $10,000 prize. Both Norton Flavel and Kim Perrier are the recipients, using the scholarship for travel study and the advancement of their career.
Founding Director, David Handley commented on this year’s selection stating, “Norton and Kim have both made ambitious and exciting works which are an immense credit to each of them and wonderful additions to the show.”
With over 220,000 visitors expected to flock to Cottesloe this year, the show aims to provide something for everyone. From school education programs to tours, artist’s talks and children’s DIY tour books, the event is all inclusive.
Now heading into its final week don’t delay, Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe runs from 6 – 23 March 2015.
