Simon Lloyd | AT_SALON²

AT_SALON² is well in to its program, and Simon Lloyd is introducing his latest exciting instalment of '3 Elements' to the show.

The all-year-round ‘mini art fair’ is in its last instalment for 2015, fusing the disciplines of art and design in another cracking season. Inviting thirteen artists, designers and writers to join in the showcase, season 3 showcases strong conceptual and process-based practices by two international, and eleven Australian artists.

One artist that has taken up the charge to negotiate the unique format of the AT_SALON² program is Simon Lloyd. Challenging the traditional conventions of the gallery space, Simon Lloyd’s latest initiative 3 Elements plays with the parameters of the program.

Circulating three separate series to be each showcased in the front gallery over the span of the season, this ambitious undertaking requires each series to be ready for installation at the beginning of each month. Testing himself creatively and logistically, it is an exciting chance for Lloyd to engage with his audience and express the breadth and diversity of his practice.

Engaging with the elements of Copper, Tin and Sodium, Lloyd furthers his practice into the arenas of illusion and texture. An experimental advance, Lloyd’s exhibition comprises of painting-based works that have developed since his earlier black and white relief series of 2013.

Drawing on the medium of painting, Lloyd focusses on resolving form and colour throughout the his different series. On his material practice Lloyd states, “Painting for me is about possibilities, trying out ideas, seeing where they go and what happens on the way. The great thing is never quite knowing what might happen or where you might find yourself.Through many years of designing and making objects l have developed a rich relationship with materials, from the warmth and lightness of wood to the dense richness of cast iron. Paint in many ways is no different, the particular way it might flow or gel on the surface of a canvas. Of course l have a lot to understand still but the learning process is also a very dynamic one.”

This season of AT_SALON² gives prominence to the visitors to partake and interact with the works. Asked to reflect upon their experience as a critic, audience members have been dotting Post-it notes around the gallery space – with an array of critical and insightful appraisals coming to light.

Simon Lloyd’s latest exhibit Tin opened yesterday, head along and please post your musings in the gallery space.
