George Gittoes | Night Vision
An artist that has dedicated his life and art to documenting and working in some of the most troubling places of conflict, George Gittoes is inseparable from his work.
As testament to his impressive archive of work, essays and movies, Mitchell Fine Art presents Night Vision, an exhibition drawing from material and works culminated over the past 30 years. Throughout the gallery paintings, sculpture and writings are integrated together, relating specifically to a series of unpublished novels and essays written by Gittoes.
For nearly 4 decades Gittoes has documented the best and worst of some of the world’s most notorious human conflicts in Somalia, Rwanda, Bosnia, Nicaragua, South Africa and Afghanistan. His artworks capture the atrocities and attacks on basic human rights and have typically reflected his social, political and humanitarian observations of man’s treatment of his fellow man. His artworks are both confronting and thought provoking.
In 2015 he was awarded the Sydney Peace Prize in recognition of his life’s work in contributing to the peace making process. This Saturday 30th July, Gittoes will be providing an artist talk at Mitchell Fine Art. And alongside the exhibition Gittoes is launching a major book titled Night Vision, as well as a movie screening of ‘Snow Monkey’ at the Queensland Art Gallery of Modern Art.
