Artist Profile at Talk Contemporary
Controversy ensued the recent announcement of Justine Varga's 'Maternal Line' as the winner of the 2017 Olive Cotton Prize, leaving many in the art world perplexed. Non-objective artists in Australia have been concerned with portraiture for more than a century. What is it about the relationship between non-objective art and portraiture that continues to evoke such a divided response?
As part of the 2017 Sydney Contemporary Talks Program, join Artist Profile’s Kon Gouriotis and Lucy Stranger as they speak with a selection of Australian contemporary artists including Michael Buzacott, Andrew Christofides, Debra Dawes, Hilarie Mais, Justine Varga and Coen Young (artists) on portraiture in non-objective art, and whether it has the potential to extend portraiture beyond the restraints of the representational.
