Exhibition: Hanga: Modern Japanese Prints
The dynamic art of Japanese printing and its ongoing legacy is showcased in this latest exhibition.
Including over sixty works from the Gallery’s collection of Japanese prints created after 1950, it shows the development of innovations in technique and style. Japanese culture is renowned for its centuries-old foundation in printmaking. The exhibition stays true to this. Artists have drawn from ancient techniques and imagery whilst incorporating and experimenting with new forms and technologies. Featured are some of the key figures of the sosaku-hanga (creative print) movement, Kiyoshi Saito and Kawano Kauro, as well as new innovators who reconfigure traditional imagery and modes of production. Styles of abstraction and minimalism are blended with graphic design. The exhibition is vibrant display of a range of internationally influenced styles.
