Open Field | Exhibition Tour
This Saturday 11 June, Artist Profile Editor Kon Gouriotis is leading a free tour through his curated exhibition, Open Field. Beginning with the original artworks in the Auburn Peacock Gallery and Arts Studio, the tour will then wind out and through the Auburn Botanic Gardens to engage with the replicas of the works.
To expand a Utopian vision, Open Field is a two-staged exhibition with original work by artists with connections to Western Sydney placed in the Peacock Gallery, and a replica of each work within Auburn’s Botanic Gardens. The artists included are Eric Aarons, Idil Abdullahi, Khadim Ali, Ray Beattie, Michael Butler, Elisabeth Cummings, Fiona Davies, Contessa El Kazzi, Phillip George, Stephen Little, Khaled Sabsabi, Siobhan O’Gorman, Paul Saint, David Sudmalis and Guan Wei.
Open Field considers original and replica objects, evoke unexpected memories, and connect a world of diverse cultures and histories from the local to other places. At the core of the exhibition’s inspiration is the utopian vision of local town planner Eric Black, who was inspired to create the Botanic Gardens from his chance encounter with a Japanese bonsai. Amongst the art, geometric forms, plants and animals, will be the original 1960s Japanese garden postcards from which Eric Black planned the gardens.
