Damien Shen
A touching insight into cultural identity and its many constructs, South Australian artist Damien Shen presents an exhibition that explores both his Chinese and Ngarrindjeri backgrounds.
Creating portraits of the many characters in his family, as well as his own self-portrait, his classical approach to portrait drawing is ingrained with rigour, intensity and liveliness.
Underlined by a narrative focus, his works speak of the stories and personalities of his family – with each portrait distinct as a result of Shen’s varying drawing techniques. Personal, raw and engaging, the exhibition is a timely honouring of family and culture.
