From Newtown to Potts Point, Sydney Sculpture takes shape in a celebration of the lineage of Australian steel sculpture.
After the opening of Ian McKay | Sydney Sculpture, with Flight of the Blackbird taking centre stage at Defiance Gallery, Newtown, the second stage of ‘Sydney Sculpture’ opens at Yellow House in Potts Point Wednesday 10 August.
‘Sydney Sculpture’ is a major survey show that includes the works of Janik Bouchette, Michael Buzacott, Paul Hopmeier, Jan King, Brian Koerber, Ian McKay, Russell McQuilty, Kevin Norton, Campbell Robertson-Swann, James Rogers, Paul Selwood, Harvey Shields, Michael Snape, Dave Teer and David Wilson at Defiance Gallery at the Yellow House, Potts Point.
Stretching the two-venue exhibition across Sydney, Defiance Gallery has created an active dialogue between Ian MckAy’s centre piece work, and the artists on show at Yellow House, with Mckay a point of major on inspiration for many of the artists in ‘Sydney Sculpture’.
Bringing Sydney sculpture to the forefront, the two exhibitions celebrate the individual language and the diversity of the medium. Each artist is linked by a camaraderie formed through a rich history of exhibiting, studying, teaching and travelling together over the last forty years.
Demonstrating the depth and potential of steel each artist will have a small and a large scale work on display,with McKay’s at Defiance Gallery, Newtown. Whilst working from a common medium – steel – the works selected demonstrate the rich directions of steel sculpture. From the dense geometry of Campbell Robertson-Swann’s geometric Still to the light and lively fluid form of Brian Koerber’s Roo Alert – each artist is distinct in style and direction.
An engaging and insightful look at Australian steel sculpture, Defiance Gallery have started a important discussion and celebration of its range and stature in Australian art. ‘Sydney Sculpture’ opens Wednesday 10 August, and Ian McKay’s work is on show at Defiance Gallery until 20 August – join in on the discussion and make sure you take advantage of both!
