Chippendale’s creative New World Art Prize 2014
This Thursday 8 May, marks the inaugural grand opening of the Chippendale New World Art Prize. Created by the Chippendale Creative Precinct, a non-profit organisation established in 2010, the award is apart of the initiative to promote and encourage Chippendale’s emerging cultural hub.
The theme of the prize Utopia takes its inspiration from the CCP’s vision to develop a space in Chippendale embedded in the arts, vibrant with life and activity.
Guest judges Archibald winner Del Kathryn Barton, and Dean and Director of COFA Ross Harley have selected 44 finalists to be displayed at the exhibition. After an overwhelming amount of submissions, the final winner will be announced Thursday night at 7pm by philanthropist and Chairman of Frasers Property Australia Dr Stanley Quek.
This community-minded event by the Chippendale Creative Precinct aims to enhance the synergy of the local creative community, generate economic growth and provide inspiration through the arts in an urban environment. Spanning three locations; NG Art Gallery, GL Central Pop-Up Gallery and Carlton Street, Park Lane Pop-Up Gallery, the exhibition encourages viewers to wander the laneways of Chippendale and be immersed in the creative precinct and community.
Later in the week there is an opportunity to hear from the artists themselves; involving the audience in the artistic dialogue. The weekend will involve artist talks and a walking tour of the three galleries that starts at NG Art Gallery, Saturday 10 May as well as Sunday 17 May, 12-2pm. A select group of finalists will share their invaluable insights and personal reflections in an open discussion with the audience.
As apart of the inclusive event, viewers are also invited to take part in the People’s Choice Award by taking a photo of their favourite and posting it on Instagram. The enthusiasm that drives this new award sets it to be one that is not to be missed in the contemporary art scene.
