Anh Do wins the 2014 Kogarah Art Prize
Multi-talented artist, comedian and author Anh Do has been announced as the successful recipient of the 2014 City of Kogarah Art Prize. His winning artwork Wombat Man was selected by Anne Loxley, Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney.
Awards were presented by Kogarah Mayor, Councillor Stephen Agius at the opening night of the Finalists’ Exhibition Friday 20 June. Out of the 179 works that were submitted, 35 finalists were selected by Loxley to be part of the exhibition. Entries ranged from local artists across to indigenous artworks from Fitzroy Crossing in Western Australia.
Judge Anne Loxley praised the strength and diversity of artists at the show saying, “It’s a strong, interesting show, which celebrates the local and has attracted artists from far afield. There are skilful works, and there are artists here whose work I haven’t seen before – and I would be interested in seeing more from them.”
A notable second place was Annabelle Josse’s work Now and Then, and commended was Sallwa Hourani’s Stage II.
Loxley described Anh Do’s winning artwork as ‘a commanding portrait, and the bravura of his painting style is very impressive.’
Alongside his first place, Anh Do’s popularity prevailed to receive the Packing Room Prize for Wombat Man.
In response to his success Anh Do said “I’m so thrilled to be a part of this prize. I grew up in Earlwood and some of my best mates went to Kogarah High. I’m honored to be judged the winner by Anne who curates such amazing shows at the MCA and I’m just incredibly happy tonight.”
The Finalists’ Exhibition will be on show for the public at the Kogarah Library and Cultural Centre until Sunday 13 July.
