Pop to Popism

Calling Pop to popism one of their most ambitious exhibitions ever, the Art Gallery of New South Wales has brought Pop in all its dynamic shocks and variations starting this November.

A daring and explosive art movement, Pop art exploded onto the cultural scene in the early 1960s as artists challenged convention and ‘high art’, to embrace the contemporary everyday world of advertising, pop culture and consumerism.

The exhibition includes international masterpieces such as Roy Lichtenstein’s first comic-style painting Look Mickey, Andy Warhol’s Triple Elvis and David Hockney’s Portrait of an artist, as well as showcasing Australian artists Martin Sharp, Howard Arkley, Brett Whiteley and Maria Kozic.

With over 200 works brought together in the exhibition, the organisation behind this event has been no mean feat. Works have been collected from over 45 lenders world wide – including the Andy Warhol Musesum, Tate and Museum of Modern Art – Pop to popism  is part of the Sydney International Art Series and is exclusive to Sydney.

This summer exhibition involves a program of events that explore every facet and dimension of Pop; including talks, lecture series, art workshops, tours, film series, live music and the Pop art Parties. Family friendly events include art making activities for kids, as well as a performance of Popcornucopia, overall making for an entertaining school holidays. For the full program click here
