Finalists announced for the 2014 Moran Art Prizes
The 60 finalists of the 2014 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize and the 2014 Moran Contemporary Photography Prize have been announced, marking the final phase in the lead up to the announcement of the winners on the 28th of October.
The Moran Art Prizes annually present a combined total of almost $300,000 in monies and prizes to Australian artists. Divided into two categories; both prizes have both been narrowed down to 30 finalists who will each receive a prize of $1000. The winner of the Portrait Prize will receive $150 000, whilst the Photography Prize winner will receive $50 000.

After a record number of entries this year – almost 1,000 for the Portrait Prize, and 3,000 for the Photography Prize – the judging panel was set no easy task. The diverse panel included Edmund Capon AM OBE, Australian artist Lewis Miller, New York based Aidan J Sullivan (Reportage/Getty Images) and Australian photographer William Long.
Co-judge Edmund Capon commented on the past success of the prize, stating, “the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize has been embraced, not only by the artistic community, but also by the general public. It has galvanised a lot of interest because of the size of the prize, and also because of the quality of entries it attracts.”
On his selection process he added, “As a judge you are very consciously looking and selecting a number of works from a very large number of entries, with a view to putting together an exhibition that you hope is going to say something about the state of portrait painting in Australia. I feel that it’s good to have a broad spread of styles and attitudes and ways of interpreting the human condition. If I saw something that was very unusual, that spoke to me, I wanted it to be included.”
The Moran Art Prizes exhibition will be opened by Edmund Capon AM OBE and will be open to the public from October 29, 2014. Entry to the exhibition is free and everyone’s invited to vote in the People’s Choice Award, with the winning artist and photographer, and also a randomly selected voter eligible to win a cash prize of $1,000.
