Artists blow-in to Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery
In a whirlwind trip, a group of artists have journeyed to outback Australia to blow-in, paint and put together an exhibition at the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery. Calling themselves the Blow-In Art Collective, the show opens tomorrow night 11 October.
Arriving in Broken Hill in September 2014, the trip was driven by a desire to escape the rat race of the city and get lost in the outback. Living with the local community, and painting for a couple of weeks en plein air, in this exhibition the artists present their personal and unique responses to the urban and natural landscape of the area.
Artists involved in the Blow-In Art Collective include Euan Macleod, Luke Sciberras, Sophie Cape, Guy Maestri, Peter Kingston, Steve Lopes, Kevin Connor, Ann Thomson and Guy Warren.
The Australian outback has long stimulated the national imagination; its encompassing sky and burnt landscape, as well as colourful characters that inhabit it make for a vibrant and entertaining subject.
Other exhibitions will also be opening at Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery this Saturday, including local artist Ann Evers presenting Weaving a Desert Story, Thomas Degens’ Arduous Landscape, Mervyn Bishop’s Our Elders and Kylie Banyard’s Imagining Alternatives.
The exhibition opening starts at 6pm, all are invited to celebrate with the locals and artists, to share stories and see what is set to be a truly diverse portrait of Broken Hill’s cultural landscape.
