JUMAADI wins 2017 MOSMAN ART PRIZE
Reaching its 70th Anniversary, and increasing the prize money - the Mosman Art Prize presents its winners.
Congratulations to Jumaadi who was won the 2017 Mosman Art Prize, awarded $40,000 for his work Some kind of record, 2016.
Some kind of record, 2016 is a 24 x panel acrylic work that narrates the artist’s journey, originating from Jumaadi’s study trips between rural New South Wales, his home studio in Sydney and excursions to Java.
Continuing Jumaadi’s interest in history of migration and exchange between Australia and Indonesia, the artist states, “the works are acrylic painted on filing boards that I sourced in Cowra during a residency program, while my main focus was to trace the history of 1200 Indonesian political prisoners taken by the Dutch to Cowra from Digul during WWII (1943). The boards have been in my custody the last few years and the conversation taking place in various studios – Cowra, Sydney, Java – until we arrive in a conclusion, the composition.”
Drawing from a variety of sources, he states, “each painting contains notes, sketches, unfinished picture and line of poetry… in this work, layer and hybrid images construct a composition to build a grand narrative.”
To commemorate the award’s 70th Anniversary the major prize increased from $30,000 to $50,000.
A new Commendation Prize of $10,000, The Margaret Olley Award was established to honour the late artist, and was warded to Aboriginal artist Helen McCarthy Tyalmuty (Batjamal) from Bulgul, NT, community.
The Allan Gamble Memorial Award was awarded to Glenn Locklee, and Clara Adolph was awarded the Emerging Artist Award.
